Already using GitHub independently for a Fulton Schools course? This service is for you—whether your account uses a personal or ASU email address, or you created a GitHub organization without ETS.
Share your current setup and course goals. ETS will review them with you, define the supported transition steps and establish the ASU-managed course environment.
Why use the ASU-managed environment?
An independently managed GitHub setup is one an instructor created or administers outside the ETS course service. It may use a personal email address, an ASU email address or a self-created GitHub organization. ETS can help transition the course to the ASU-managed environment. Instructors starting from scratch can request a new course setup too.

- Select ETS as the IT Support Group.
- Begin the description with GitHub for Academic Courses.
- Include the course and section, semester and Canvas course URL.
Returning for a new semester
For each new semester, instructors provide an updated roster. ETS prepares student access and the course environment for the new term.
Contact ETS before the next semester with the updated roster; ETS takes care of the setup.

What happens next?
1. ETS reviews your setup
An ETS administrator contacts you to understand the course goals and any accounts, organizations or repositories already used for the course.
2. ETS defines the transition
ETS explains the supported next steps for the current setup, then establishes the course structure and permissions in the ASU-managed environment.
3. Students are invited
You provide the current roster. ETS prepares student access, and students receive an invitation to join the ASU-managed course environment.
Before you change anything
Keep existing accounts, organizations and repositories in place until ETS reviews the setup and provides the transition steps that apply to your course.
Prepare students
Tell students where to find the invitation, how course work is submitted, what collaboration is permitted and where official grades and deadlines are maintained.
Use a small practice activity before the first major assignment so students can confirm access.
Example course workflows
Examples include distributing repository-based assignments, maintaining student work in repositories and submitting changes for instructor review. Bring the actual course goals to ETS; the course does not need to match a fixed use-case list.

I already use GitHub for my course without ETS. Is this service for me?
Yes. This service is intended for Fulton Schools instructors who already manage course work in GitHub outside the ETS course service. That includes accounts registered with a personal or ASU email address and GitHub organizations created without ETS. Include a description or links to your current setup in the request. ETS will review it with you and provide the supported transition steps.
What should I include in a first-time request?
Include the course and section, semester and Canvas course URL. A brief use case and the current GitHub setup, if any, are also helpful for the ETS follow-up.
How is course access set up?
Instructors provide the current roster, and ETS handles student access setup. Include the Canvas course URL with the initial request.
Which GitHub account should I use?
Course access is connected to ASURITE. ETS provides the applicable invitation and sign-in instructions during course setup.
What happens in a later semester?
Instructors provide an updated roster, and ETS prepares student access and the course environment for the new term. Contact ETS before the semester to get started.
Does the environment provide retention?
The ASU-managed environment provides multi-year retention. ETS provides applicable lifecycle guidance during setup.
Can I request the service if I am new to GitHub?
Yes. Fulton Schools instructors with a repository-based course need can request an ASU-managed course setup. Include the course goals and Canvas course URL in the request.
Can I use this for research or administrative work?
This page covers academic courses. Submit an ETS General Support request to ask which service applies to another use.
Responsible use
Protect credentials
Never place passwords, access tokens, API keys or private keys in a repository. If a credential is exposed, revoke or rotate it and follow ASU security guidance.

Follow the course’s access and sharing settings. Review the ASU Data Classification Tool and contact ETS before using regulated data.
